Homeschooling

I began homeschool as soon as any eager prospective homeschooling mom, pretty much as soon as my child could put two words together. I tried to glean knowledge from any homeschool mom I met. My heart skipped a beat when I would meet other families who did or were thinking of homeschooling. I always knew that was what I wanted to do as a mom. However, starting out was a bit terrifying. I didn't want to shelter my children too much. I didn't want to give my children a lacking education. I prayed, I worried, I wavered in my decision. I finally did begin homeschooling my daughter in Kindergarten. 3 weeks into our year I heard about a group called Classical Conversations through another homeschool mom in the area. I was excited to hear that other families in the area where getting together. I had no idea the impact it would make on my homeschool journey.

As soon as I visited the group for the first time I loved it! it was like someone took everything my heart wanted for my children and put it in a nice little package. It gave us community. It gave us structure and vision. It put God at the center of learning and parents the responsibility of teaching. I learn a little more about classical education every year and understand how we were created to learn. My children have grown in confidence in their learning and I in my teaching. Every time I have doubts of homeschooling or think of calling it quits, God places someone in my life who I can tell about my community and how amazing it has been for our family. It reminds me I can do it. I am called and I am equipped.

Our schooling methods are often eclectic depending on the subject. We range from classical, to traditional, Charlotte Mason, and even Unschooling on some days. I know that every home is different and every home school is likewise. What works for me and my family is different from the next. That is the beauty of it. We live unique lives that intertwine with each other to make each other richer. I often am encouraged by someone else's experience and what works for them. But at the end of all my planning and categorizing, I remember my purpose. To teach my children to love. Love learning, love others, and love God.
