Setting My Goals

One more week to go before another year starts. My oldest in 3rd grade, my second in 1st. Its seems unbelievable even now as I write it. UNBELIEVABLE! As one fellow parent once put it, "it breaks your heart doesn't it?" and it truly does. We spend all of our time and effort raising our children to achieve the next thing. Jump the next hurtle. But then when its happened we are left, mouths gaping at the half grown child standing in front of us.

Each year as I plan my lessons and map out the weeks to come, I want to give my year a central focus. Last year my focus was to hide scripture in my children hearts. I made it a point every day to read and memorize a small passage of scripture. I found a book at this discount Christian book store for only $2 called Knowing God (Memory Bible Sing & Remember Book) it contains 24 quick bible stories, scripture readings, and a song to help memorize scripture. It was a great tool for us. My house does a lot of singing. Most of our memorization is done though song, so this was really the best thing for us. I have a second book this year and we will continue to do one scripture a week.

This summer I have been thinking and praying about what this next school years goal is. What do I as a teacher/mother/mentor want to instill in my children? This years focus for me will be writing. Starting with me, I plan to use this blog to develop my writing skills, keep track of our activities and lessons and to hopefully encourage some other mamas along the way. For my 3rd grader I want to begin to give her the skills and practice to become a good writer. For my first grader who is still working on reading I want to give her basic skills for spelling and sentence writing that she can build. My Littles, 3 and 2, are still in the coloring scribbling stage. However, I have noticed that my 3 year old hasn't mastered the skill of holding her crayons and pencils nearly as will as her 2 year old brother. So we will most likely be working on some fine motor activities to strengthen those muscles.

A new year is always fresh and exciting. Full of hope and anticipation. I hope that I can look back on my year and see some true growth in each of us. I believe it starts with me.
